We won’t pretend to be well-traveled in the Monterey department, but we enjoyed what we saw and are keen to explore further -not just because we loved watching Big Little Lies!
The 17-mile drive is stunning to meander, passing views of the ocean, weaving through the Del Monte Forest, gazing at the famous golf course (Pebble Beach) and marvel at multi-million-dollar homes.
The Old Fisherman’s Wharf is worth a visit – it can get a little touristy but the views of the bay are beautiful, as are the seals that sunbathe on the nearby rocks and buoys! We haven’t done it, but you can go whale-watching or do a kayaking excursion on the bay from here.
Carmel was a stop along the way on our first trip to Monterey, so you can easily cross both off your list in one go. If there’s time, head a little further South to Point Lobos State Natural Reserve and peek at the dramatic rock formations rising from the ocean. The reserve has 13 trails, from easy to challenging – we’re told that the Cypress Grove Trail draws quite a crowd, boasting the rugged coastal views and Monterey cypress trees that hang a little too close for comfort on the seaside cliffs.
If the weather isn’t great, or if you want to be inside for a change and you’re willing to part with $50 per person (ouch), head to Monterey Bay Aquarium! Apparently there are 45 interactive exhibits, featuring reptiles, octopi, birds, fish and invertebrates…and they offer a variety of tours (some of which could allow you to feed some of the sea life).
