One for the foodies! This place has a nice story…
When built, it was the largest project ever undertaken in the city. Inspired by classical European architecture, it boasts elegant arches and a clock tower that stands 245ft tall. It was SF’s primary transportation hub, seeing 50,000+ commuters each day, taking the ferry into and out of the city. In its hey-day, it was one of the busiest transit terminals in the world – that was until cars grew in popularity and the Golden Gate / Bay bridges were constructed in the 1930s, rendering the Ferry Building all but obsolete. By the end of 1955, it had become office space, and it wasn’t until 2003, after 4 years of heavy restorative work, that the San Francisco Ferry Building re-opened to the public as the Ferry Building Marketplace and Ferry services resumed.
The mission of the marketplace is to promote regional artisan producers and be a gathering place for the Bay Area’s communities. We enjoyed a cheese platter at “Side Kick” but there’s a lot to choose from!
